Why it looks like this

A stubborn layer holds Syracuse at a 2,800-foot ceiling and 5 miles in thunderstorm rain mist, and low stratus has Toronto at a 900-foot ceiling and 6 miles in light showers rain mist. Everywhere else, ceilings sit well clear of the instrument thresholds, so the network is flying visual.

How this score actually works

Four steps, no black box

The model is mechanical, not magical. We tell you exactly what goes in, exactly what each piece can move, and exactly which airport's history we're measuring against.

  1. 01 Pull raw aviation weather

Live METARs, TAFs, pilot reports, AIR/SIGMETs and short-range models. The same data dispatchers and pilots actually look at.

  2. 02 Score every airport, hourly

Each input adds a capped contribution (visibility, ceiling, gusts, the upcoming TAF, recent PIREPs, model guidance), so no single channel can dominate the result.

  3. 03 Pair with delay windows

For every tracked airport we anchor to its own clear-weather (VFR) baseline, then match each signal to rolling airport delay windows after the weather has had time to affect queues.

  4. 04 Surface the signal, not the noise

What you see is the 0–100 score, the live concrete factors driving it, and the per-airport track record under that exact regime, written in plain English, never wrapped in a deterministic promise.

Plain-English decoder

The technical bits, translated

Aviation weather has its own dialect, and most explainers either oversimplify or quote the regs verbatim. This is the version we'd give a non-pilot friend who actually wanted to understand what the map is saying.

VFR

The cooperative weather. Visibility's good, ceilings are high, and controllers can run a normal arrival rate. This is each airport's baseline for lag-matched delay pressure.

MVFR

The sneaky one. Still legal for plenty of operations, but ceilings or visibility have dropped enough that throughput starts to dip, sometimes a lot, depending on the airport.

IFR / LIFR

Instrument Flight Rules. Low or very low ceilings/visibility. Spacing widens, arrival rates fall, and at constrained airports the queue starts piling up fast.

METAR

The half-hourly airport observation. Wind, visibility, clouds, temperature, pressure, present weather. Boring until it isn't.

TAF

The airport forecast for the coming hours. We treat it as a leading indicator, not a guarantee. A TAF that calls for IFR doesn't always deliver one.

PIREP

A pilot reporting what they actually flew through: turbulence, icing, cloud tops. FL means flight level, roughly hundreds of feet. PIREPs are gold; they're real conditions, not modelled ones.

AIR/SIGMET

The official heads-up that something hazardous is happening over a region: thunderstorms, severe icing, big turbulence. We let these inflate scores in the affected boxes.

NBM / GFS

Forecast models. NBM is a blended ensemble; GFS is the global standard. We use them as guidance. They explain a piece of risk, never the whole thing.

Built for pilots, dispatchers, and anyone who hates surprise delays. Data refreshes live because we fly too.
