Among 974,199 paired flights that left 15 to 360 minutes late, the median flight reached its destination 29 minutes closer to schedule. This is gate-to-gate recovery and includes taxi time, routing, and timetable padding as well as time in the air.

Scheduled gate-to-gate length is the cleanest way to test the airline line on its own terms. Each row uses flights that actually left at least 15 minutes late.

Enter the departure delay and scheduled gate-to-gate time. The result uses the exact sector × delay cell when it has at least 100 paired flights, then falls back to the broader delay cohort.
This is a descriptive cohort rather than a prediction for a specific flight. Weather, congestion, taxi time, routing, aircraft type, and timetable padding all affect the outcome.

What “make up time” means here
Does this prove the plane flew faster?
No. We measure gate-to-gate schedule recovery: actual departure delay minus actual arrival delay. The number includes airborne time, taxi time, routing, congestion, and padding already built into the timetable. It answers whether the flight reached the destination closer to schedule. It does not show exactly how the minutes came back.
How do you know the two board rows are the same flight?
We require the same flight number, exact origin and destination, a valid actual clock at both airports, and the nearest scheduled arrival 20 minutes to 20 hours after departure. Cancelled and unresolved legs are excluded.
Why start at 15 minutes late?
Small clock differences are noisy and are not what passengers mean when an airline says it will make up a delay. Published cohorts therefore start at 15 minutes and stop at six hours; extreme or ambiguous clock-wrap cases stay out.
What does “arrived within 15 minutes” mean?
The actual arrival board time was no more than 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival. It is a simple schedule-recovery threshold and does not follow any airline-specific contractual definition of on-time performance.
